This video introduces Educating for Democracy in the Digital Age, a partnership between Civic Engagement Research Group, the National Writing Project, and Oakland Unified School District, to bring more civic engagement opportunities to all youth in Oakland, California. The project supports teachers as well as educating the community about the importance of civic engagement. Through this program, civic engagement projects give students a voice and chance to be agents of change in their communities. In addition, real life projects in the community give students a chance to apply soft skills needed to graduate career, college, and community ready.

The video discusses the impact of technology advances on civics education and the need to help students gain digital literacy skills. This video could be used to gain support from families and community members for bringing more civics education to a school or district, as well as give educators ideas for transforming the way civics education is taught. This Teaching Channel video is accompanied by reflection questions.
