By mastering the twelve foundational competencies, educators can build a solid foundation for continued growth. The competencies are a subset of those outlined in the Educator Competencies for Personalized, Learner-Centered Environments, created to empower a growing number of teachers to implement and scale up a transformation of their classrooms into places of personalized, student-centered learning. While Educator Competencies explores many areas, twelve competencies were flagged as foundational and ‘prerequisite’ to all others, including demonstrating a dedication to all learners.
Dedication to All Learners
Demonstrate a dedication to all learners – especially those historically marginalized and/or least served by public higher education – reaching college, career and civic readiness.
Teachers who have mastered a dedication to all learners:
- work to improve the unequal distribution of resources to students
- are aware of unintentional biases and work to address them
- know how to connect students to services—both inside and out of school
- use restorative practices to build inclusion and strong learning communities
These videos help illustrate the foundational competency, “Dedication to All Learners”, and feature:
- Fellow teachers demonstrating key techniques and strategies
- Experts and peers discussing practice
- Students reflecting on their experiences
Truly serving all students – especially those from groups that have been historically marginalized – requires deep work to uncover ones own assumptions. In this video, a teacher discusses the moment when she first confronted her biases and began to make changes. This story can inspire teachers at any stage in their journey.
Restorative practices can encourage inclusion of all students, foster safe and respectful learning communities and help students learn social responsibilities within those communities. The video shows how restorative practices and circles can be used for multiple purposes, including how to build empathy, prevent conflicts and repair harm.
