How to Artfully Enroll Parents in Learner-Centered Transformation

This article from the Principal of Red Bank Elementary School in South Carolina, shares successes and failures the school faced while building family support for student-centered changes. The author asserts that for successful school transformation, parents must be “artfully enrolled” in the process. This began with challenging parents to grapple with tough questions about traditional schooling. Next, displaying learning progression data in the hallways and letting students run conferences helped parents see their students as drivers of their own learning.

Though written by an elementary school principal, these strategies can be used by any K-12 institution to get buy-in for school change. The article could be used to start a school-wide conversation about ways to gain parents’ support.
