This article in the New York Times showcases the winners of a contest asking students to connect what they are learning in school to their own lives. It includes the full text of the articles submitted by the winners as well as excerpts from runner-ups. Students found new connections between literature and historical events they are studying and current events unfolding around them, from connections between the current role of social media and “Fahrenheit 451” to parallels to climate change in Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” and Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot”.
These samples of student work will be inspiring to teachers, students, and anyone from the community interested hearing the viewpoint of youth.
