This article in the New Haven Register, discusses the impact that Kimberly Sullivan, inaugural student board member, has had on the New Haven Board of Education. Kimberly Sullivan finished her one-year term in June 2016, as the first student member on the New Haven Board of Education to graduate from high school. Sullivan, who was voted by her peers to the board, was one of the leading voices during public comment at board meetings, advocating for students to serve and provide a student voice. Mayor Toni Harp, who serves as president of the board, said Sullivan taught the board what was important about democracy: “finding your voice and finding a way to express it in a manner that actually improves the system and creates change.”

Educators, students, and members of the public in other cities interested in advocating for student representation on boards of education may wish to read this article.
