This research-to-practice brief explores teaching practices that promote social-emotional learning (SEL) and positive learning environments. The author begins with an overview of SEL and discusses action steps policymakers and educators can take to support it.
Next, the brief provides an overview of 10 teaching practices that encourage the development of SEL. These practices were identified through a thorough research review that identified six research-based SEL programs and eight scholars that were included in the study.
Lastly, the brief outlines ways existing teacher evaluation frameworks can be used to support SEL and includes a crosswalk between the 10 identified SEL teaching practices and three common professional teaching frameworks. This brief will be of interest to policymakers and education leaders, as well as teachers.
