This article makes the case for rethinking ideas about grit and growth mindsets in the classroom. “Grit”, made popular in the education realm by Angela Duckworth’s research, in simple terms means the perseverance of effort over the long-term. The author makes the argument that everyone has the potential to be “gritty”, but it must be cultivated by giving students varied, inspiring, authentic, and fulfilling experiences–what she calls passion-based learning experiences. The author offers three strategies for bringing passion-based experiences into the classroom, as well as ideas to help students uncover their interests and support their exploration of those passions.
This article may help educators think about the importance of experiences that inspire students, drive their interests and allow them to take the lead in their continuous learning.
