This article begins with a brief overview of the types of online learning available in states across the country as well as the reasons full and part-time online learning can provide a learning pathway for certain student populations not well-served in traditional school settings. The article outlines eight positive trends in online learning. These include more project-based and more personalized options for students. In addition, online learning is becoming more interactive with more supports and chances to build relationships with a virtual community of learners. Throughout, links to promising programs are included. The author concludes with advice to state policy-makers to continue to improve online learning as well as tips for students considering an online school.
