Research has demonstrated that well-designed personalized learning opportunities can elevate student achievement. But how to account for cultural diversity as well as varying levels of competency in a single classroom can be a challenge for many educators. Many of the current “equity” approaches to mathematics teaching focus upon cognitive approaches (e.g., growth mindset) or can assume that students who share cultural backgrounds will need the same instruction or support.
The question for this Distinguished Fellows’ Seminar is: How can educators rehumanize mathematics learning and establish assessments that serve as both a window and a mirror? The featured presenter will be Dr. Rochelle Gutiérrez, Professor of Curriculum and Instruction at the College of Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

This is the first online event hosted by the Students Centered Learning Research Collaborative which works to investigate and evaluate what is known about student-centered learning and leverage that knowledge to effect meaningful change at scale. Funded by the Nellie Mae Education Foundation with additional support from the Overdeck Family Foundation, the Research Collaborative currently supports four studies and nine distinguished fellows who are leading the field in policy, practice, and research.
