This article shares three ways, based on feedback and interviews from teachers and researchers of competency-based learning (CBL), to introduce competency-based learning into a new environment. CBL refers to the notion of allowing learners to acquire credits based on goals they hit rather than the amount of time they spend in a chair, often referred to as “seat time.” But, while CBL has gained momentum and popularity, there are still hurdles schools, districts, and states face when attempting to move away from the old model and towards CBL.
The author’s tips use real world examples from schools, districts, and educators, that should help any school leader or district start to think about how to implement and sustain CBL and to ensure involvement from teachers.
