This report examines what it means to be competent in the 21st century. It begins with an overview of competency-based education. It then explores the competencies needed for career and college readiness with attention given to existing personal and deeper learning competency frameworks. The report concludes that competency in the 21st century must include academics as well as a range of cognitive, intrapersonal, and interpersonal skills. It also requires students apply and transfer skills and knowledge across disciplines and from one situation to the next.
This report provides a good overview of the critical competencies needed by today’s students and will be of interest to educators, researchers, and policy-makers. It also suggests several steps state leaders can take to further improve state competencies.
