In this blog article, the Innovation Program Manager at The Council of Chief State School Officers explores the opportunities under ESSA for states to innovate their assessment programs. In particular the author looks at innovations in summative assessments such as the use of performance assessments as part of a state’s summative assessment system and the establishment of graduation requirements or guidelines that include performance assessments, capstone projects, or portfolios. The article places the most emphasis on innovations in formative assessments with examples from states working to drive deeper learning, focus on personalized learning, and create competency-based pathways.

This article is a good read for educators as well as state leaders. It provides a good overview of current state innovations and explains the role of different types of assessments within a state’s overall system.
