By Brian Stack
November 5, 2016

In this article, Brian Stack, a Principal from New Hampshire, explores parents’ fears that because colleges do not understand competency education, attendance at a high school implementing this student-centered approach could harm their child’s admissions chances. First, this principal provides a simple overview of competency education for families. Next, he describes competency education efforts at the college level. He also explains what college admissions officers receive from a school implementing mastery-based approaches, including a transcript that looks very similar to a traditional one and additional information regarding the school’s unique program. He asserts that students at schools with competency education programs will be more college ready than their peers.

This article will interest families in districts moving to competency education. Educators, support staff, school administrators, and district leaders working with parents might also use this article to help allay fears of families who are unsure about the impact of education reforms on their children.
