This article, written by a student, describes the culture at One Stone school in Boise, Idaho. One Stone is a student-led and directed nonprofit committed to making students better leaders and the world a better place. The school is free and open to any student. Much of the work at One Stone occurs through Design Lab, in which groups of 3-5 students use design thinking to take on a self-selected project which will befit the community.
This article looks at the culture students have worked to develop at the school. In particular, students have focused on the importance of vulnerability. They feel this character trait allows students to build deep relationships and to open up to give an receive feedback in a safe environment, creating a culture in which failing forward is celebrated. Any educator or staff person that works with youth would benefit from this student perspective.
