This article outlines the plans of the Pittsfield School District to redesign teaching and learning to become more student centered. The document introduces the concept of student centered learning. It also provides detailed descriptions of the district’s plans to provide multiple pathways to learning through in classroom, co-curricular, and non-traditional opportunities such as authentic assessment, flexible scheduling, community-based learning, and extended learning opportunities; as well as initiatives such as mastery based learning and dual-credit opportunities. It discusses the professional development that will be provided to support teachers. Lastly it details ways in which the community can support student centered learning in the district.
In addition to providing a summary of the plan of one district, this document could serve as a sample for other districts looking to develop materials to help the community better understand their school redesign efforts.
