‘Restorative Justice’ A New Approach to Discipline at School

By Eric Westervelt
August 18, 2016

This radio report is the second of a two-part series on restorative justice, aired on NPR’s All Things Considered radio program. The reporter sits in on a harm circle held after a fight at an Oakland, California, middle school. The report features the voices of students, parents, and educators participating in the circle and gives a good sense of how a circle meeting may sound and feel. Harm circles are a restorative practice that bring together all affected parties after an incident has occurred to discuss the harm done and how to make it right.

The radio report may provide a helpful example of this practice for educators, support staff, parents, or students interested in learning about, advocating for, or beginning to implement harm circles and other restorative practices at their school.
