September 22, 2017

Competency-based education (CBE) allows students to master skills and knowledge at their own pace. This toolkit, developed by American Institutes for Research (AIR) features surveys from a recent AIR CBE study which schools can administer to gain a comprehensive picture of CBE implementation in six research-based core areas:

  • learning targets,
  • measurement of learning,
  • instructional approaches and supports,
  • assessment of learning,
  • pacing and progression, and
  • when and where learning takes place.

The toolkit includes a User Guide, Student CBE Experiences Surveys, Teacher CBE Practices Surveys, and supporting documents such as permission forms and administration instructions. By using these surveys, schools can gather high-quality formative data to gauge progress towards and guide improvement efforts across various stages of competency education implementation.
