This dynamic case study combines narrative, video, data visuals, and photos to tell the story of a vital component of school reform efforts in the Lawrence, MA  Public Schools. The case study provides details on the creation and implementation of Acceleration Academies, week-long opportunities for personalized learning in small class settings  held over February and April vacation. The academies focus both on learning opportunities for students and growth for teachers who compete to participate. The case study  details lessons learned regarding the importance of

  • leaders as agents of change,
  • a positive celebratory culture,
  • effective structures to facilitate personalized learning, and
  • autonomy and flexibility for teachers.

This story may provide inspiration and ideas for educators and education leaders at the state, district, and local levels. Similar academies could be replicated in other locations and practices used during the academies might be incorporated into the regular school year as well.  The compelling narrative with many visuals and video clip will also appeal to community members and families.
