The Measuring and Improving Student-Centered Learning (MISCL) Toolkit is designed to help school practitioners or other stakeholders measure, understand and reflect upon the extent of student-centered learning (SCL) in high schools. It enables data collection on SCL through surveys and other measures and from a range of participants, including district and school leaders, instructional staff and high school students.
The MISCL Toolkit includes:
- MISCL Userguide—This provides instructions on how to plan for and administer the Toolkit. It also includes guidance on how to analyze the data gathered through the MISCL Toolkit instruments and use what is learned to improve SCL implementation.
- MISCL Toolkit Instruments—These are designed to help users construct a holistic understanding of SCL implementation within their high schools. The instruments include:
-
MISCL Support Tools
- The Quick Start Guide is a document to help facilitators make decisions about how to use the Toolkit.
- The Reflection Conversation Guide is provided to help users and participants within a school work together to interpret and use the data gathered in the MISCL instruments to improve SCL.
The toolkit is free and includes supports to allow schools to administer the surveys online and easily analyze the data. Appendix B in the MISCL User Guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to securely and cost-effectively administer the surveys online using a platform called Survey Gizmo and generate data reports using the MISCL Toolkit Report Generator.
When you are ready to administer the MISCL surveys, please follow the instructions in Appendix B of the MISCL User Guide and when prompted, upload these files to Survey Gizmo:
- MISCL Student Survey Template
- MISCL Instructional Staff Survey Template
- MISCL School Leader Survey Template
- MISCL District Leader Survey Template
When you are ready to generate reports using your survey data, please do so by using the online version of the MISCL Toolkit Report Generator.
