Making Mastery Work: A Close-Up View of Competency Education

By Nora Priest, Antonia Rudenstine, Ephram Weisstein
November 15, 2015

This report focuses on the experiences of students, teachers, and administrators in a select, but varied group of schools that are ahead of the curve in implementing competency education. A team of researchers spent a year and a half examining 11 high schools in New England.

The report is organized in sections that provide both an overview of current competency education practices in New England and a glimpse of the work of individual schools, including sections covering the nuts and bolts of implementation and the experience of students. The appendices include tools and exemplars developed by the studied schools.
